Reflection

There are lots of comments at the back of this book 'The secret DIARY of ADRIAN MOLE aged 13¾ '. When I firstly started to read this book, I can not easily agree with those comments. Here is one comment that made me laugh. "The funniest, most bitter-sweet book you are likely to read this year. Adrian is a marvelous creation. Read it, It is a sweet delight laced with acid." I could not help laughing after seeing this one because I thought this book was so boring rather than hilarious. I kept reading this book and I finally understand those comments` meaning. This book is a diary of a boy named 'Adrian Mole'. His age is 13¾ and it means that he is going through one of the most confusing period in his life. And there are lot of happenings around him. He falls in love but the girl(Pandora) whom he loves does not see Adrian as a the other sex.(I mean as boy friend.) She dates with a boy named Nigel who is also the best friend of Adrian. What a complex situation it is! His family also faces big problem. His father has no interest in his home and wife. Unfortunately his habit is drinking alcohol or smoking. His mother could not bear her husband. Finally, Adrian`s mother has an affair with Mr.Lucas who lives next door. This causes divorce of Adrian`s parents. Like this his life was very confusing. Adrian, however, met good friend Bert Baxter when he visited Bert`s house for volunteer working. Also, Pandora becomes his girl friend. And his parents get together at the end. As I mentioned, the story of this book is just a private life and problems of a boy. Than why this book is being recommended as a valuable book? It is because the book includes the home society, school, friendship, social problems of Britain very well. The sentences of the book is pretty funny and hudibrastic and it makes the value of this book much higher.
I had many difficulties to understand the situation which he is in and accept the family`s or friend`s behavior that they showed. It might be because of the different culture of him and me. For example, he became a friend with Bert Baxter whose age is almost Adrian`s grandfather`s. That relationship is hardly accepted by Asians especially Koreans. We learn that adults should be respected by the young. In Korea, it is very clear that there is big barrier between the young and the old. So it is almost impossible for the young to be a friend with adult. I was certainly very joyful with this book because of those many happenings that come from the different culture. I think this is the joy of reading foreign book in their language. It was very valuable experience.
